Gold Circle Racing assembled a star-studded panel to discuss the 2023 Durban July. This historic handicap will be held at Greyville on Saturday, and you can watch the full preview panel in the video below.
Host Alistair Cohen was joined on the panel this year by five-time Durban July-winning trainers Justin Snaith and Mike De Kock, who will both have multiple runners in this year's renewal.
Host Alistair Cohen was joined on the panel this year by five-time Durban July-winning trainers Justin Snaith and Mike De Kock, who will both have multiple runners in this year's renewal.
Anthony Delpech, a four-time winning rider in the Durban July, was on the panel again, along with South Africa's record-winning rider Richard Fourie, who rides Future Swing in Saturday's contest. The final man on the panel is last year's winning rider Kabelo Matsunyane, who gave listeners plenty of insight into the prep of defending champion, Winchester Mansion.
Mike De Kock was keen to keep the younger horses on-side, claiming that the older runners were going to struggle. Justin Snaith described this year's renewal as a "mixed box of chocolates", saying that you could run it ten times and get ten completely different results.
Anthony Deplech didn't hesitate when nominating Green With Envy as the best horse in the race, but was keen to stress that Flag Man wasn't far behind.
The video ends with top four selections from many of South Africa's top pundits. Nine of the 25 pundits nominated Green With Envy as the most likely winner. Royal Victory was tipped as the winner on four occasions, with See It Again receiving three votes.
Flag Man and Oriental Charm were tipped as the winners by two of the experts. Future Swing, Barbaresco, Future Pearl and Cousin Casey received one vote a piece.
