Justin Snaith wins the Durban July and is hoping to win it again
Justin Snaith confident of repeat Durban July success
The Durban July is just around the corner and we spent some quality time with Justin Snaith, trainer of 2018 victor Do It Again.
A three-time winner of the Durban July, Snaith is always confident of his chances heading into South Africa’s biggest race.
We were keen to know if Do It Again could do it again at Greyville in July.
“Yes, he can win again. We would never run him unless we thought we were going to win,” Snaith explained.
“The Gold Challenge on Saturday will be a great indicator of our well-being.”
Do It Again, which is owned by Messrs N Jonsson, B Kantor & Late W J C Mitchell, was victorious in The Gold Challenge, scoring by a half-length over Cirillo and Rainbow Bridge.
The win has shortened his Durban July odds but Hawwaam is still the overwhelming favourite.
Snaith isn’t concerned about the opposition and along with Do It Again, he has numerous winning chances.
“I will have a few runners in the Durban July due to the handicapping terms of this race,” he said. “It gives every horse a chance so it’s always tough for the better horses.
“I never worry about other trainers’ horses.”
Two leading stable chances are Doublemint and Magnificent Seven. Snaith is confident with his entire team.
“Doublemint and Magnificent Seven are extremely talented,” he said.
Winning the Durban July has been in the Snaith family since 1904 when his grandmother’s brother scored with Mr Henwood.
“It is the biggest race in South Africa steeped in tradition and running first, second and third last year was a huge statement,” Snaith said.
“My grandmother’s brother won it in 1904 with Mr Henwood, so just shows how history is involved in this incredible event.
“Everyone has a bet on the July.”
