The opening leg of South Africa's Triple Crown - which also features the Cape Town Met and the Durban July - takes place at Kenilworth this Saturday. Jet Dark will bid to win his third successive L'Ormarins King's Plate, but the defending champion will have to overcome and unbeaten three-year-old who currently dominates the betting.
We've taken a look at the confirmed field for the L'Ormarins King's Plate and picked out our best betting tips.

2022 L'Ormarins King's Plate Entries
Charles Dickens carried odds of 2/5 into the Cape Guineas, having won the first five starts of his fledgling career. Candice Bass-Robinson's star powered to an impressive four-length victory in that Classic here at Kenilworth and Charles Dickens is the 1/2 favourite for Saturday's King's Plate with Hollywoodbets.
Jet Dark warmed up for his third King's Plate by winning the Grade Three Cape Mile on his return to action. Kommetdieding could only finish third on his reappearance in the Green Point Stakes, but the former Durban July winner is sure to come on for that outing.
Trip Of Fortune beat Kommetdieding into third in the Green Point, and he'll step up into Grade One company. As will former Champions Cup winner Golden Ducat, who'll be ridden by controversial Belgian jockey, Christophe Soumillon.
Other runners include Vaughan Marshall's Grade One winner Linebacker, Golden Challenge champion Al Muthana and Brett Crawford's Zapatillas. Dean Kannemeyer's runner, Waterberry Lane has been scratched.
2022 L'Ormarins King's Plate Tips
Punters and experts alike are refusing to look beyond Charles Dickens in this year's King's Plate. Candice Bass-Robinson's star has certainly looked special on all of his starts thus far. The way he won the Cape Guineas last time out was extremely impressive and the fact he gets five pounds from his rivals, being a three-year-old, swings the balance in his favour.
Personally, I would much rather side against the odds-on favourite as he meets older horses in Grade One company for the first time. 1/2 is certainly not a backable price and the way Charles Dickens runs, coming from off the pace with a late surge, could leave the favourite vulnerable if he fails to pick up sufficiently.
Reigning and defending two-time champion, Jet Dark is the obvious place to start when looking for an alternative. Kommetdieding finished second behind Jet Dark here last season and he comes into this contest on the back of two decent placed efforts.
At the prices, I'll have an each-way punt on GOLDEN DUCAT - a two-time Grade One winner who made his return from injury in the Cape Mile back in November.
Eric Sands' charge went off at 18/1 that day, with many presuming he'd need the run, but Golden Ducat ran a cracking race, staying on right through the line to finish a close third behind Jet Dark. Again in the Green Point last time out, Golden Ducat ran really well, carrying odds of 10/1 into the fourth and final place.
Having spent well over 500 days off the track, Golden Ducat is fully entitled to come on for his first few starts of the season. He wouldn't need to improve much to get involved in the finish.
Verdict
Charles Dickens is an incredibly exciting horse and the favourite will be very hard to beat. Golden Ducat has impressed since returning from injury and he'll be our each-way selection at 16/1.
