2024 Betway Summer Cup Entries
Leading the way in the market is two-time Grade One winner, See It Again. Having only finished fifth on his second crack at the Durban July, Mike Roberts' star returned to action with an easy win in the Pinnacle Stakes at Greyville earlier this month and See It Again will carry a short price into Saturday's main event.
Four-time British Champion Jockey, Oisin Murphy has picked up the ride on second-favourite Frances Ethel, winner of the SA Oaks back in the spring. Gavin Lerena rides defending champion Royal Victory, who finished a length behind See It Again when the two met recently at Greyville.
Mike De Kock's leading chance this year is Silver Sanctuary, who claimed Grade One glory in the Woolavington 2000 earlier this year. She sits alongside Tony Peter's Main Defender in the market, with this year's SA Derby and Classic winner, Purple Pitcher also prominent in the market.
Other notable runners in Saturday's Summer Cup include consistent four-year-old Barbaresco, Sean Tarry's Future Pearl, four-year-old filly Beating Wings, and Craig Zackey's mount, Hotarubi.
2024 Summer Cup Tips
While this might be a Grade One contest, it's also a handicap. See It Again is the class horse in the race, but he's got to shoulder 60kg and no horse has carried that much weight to victory this century.
Oisin Murphy's mount, Frances Ethel will carry bottom-weight and the presence of the British Champion Jockey in her saddle could give her a boost. Main Defender boasts an excellent strike-rate at this vnue and this step up in trip could bring about further improvement.
At the prices, I like BEATING WINGS (25/1). Stuart Pettigrew's filly won three times here at Turffontein last season, including a victory in the Grade Two Igugu Stakes. Stuart Pettigrew's filly then finished third behind Silver Sanctuary in the Woolavington 2000, before a tired effort in her final outing of the season at Greyville.
After a late summer break, Diego De Gouveia's mount bounced back to winning ways here at Greyville, beating Frances Ethel, Atticus Finch and Silver Sanctuary in a Pinnacle Stakes over a mile. Beating Wings then dropped down to seven furlongs for her final prep run, where she was outpaced by favourite White Pearl in the closing stages.
This step back up trip will certainly suit Beating Wings and she brings stacks of course form to the table. Pettigrew will be pleased with the lowish draw in stall five. At 25/1, she offers good value.
Verdict
Beating Wings is our value bet in the 2024 Betway Summer Cup.
